Abstract

The purposes of the study were (1) to analyze the learners’ errors resulted from the omission of copula “be” when used with predicative adjectives (2) to design CALL lessons for teaching predicative adjectives as well as to measure its efficiency in reducing the “be” omission and (3) to study students’ attitudes towards the CALL lesson.
The subjects were thirty Pratomsuksa-Six Thai students studying English in the first semester of the academic year 2007 at Nongsangrachbumrung School, Nakae District, Nakhon Phanom Province.
The instruments used in the study consisted of (1) a pretest, (2) a posttest, (3) CALL lesson with thirty exercises produced by the researcher and (4) a questionnaire on learners’ attitudes towards CALL lesson. The CALL lesson covered nouns, verbs and predicative adjectives.
The data were collected from the participants’ scores on the pretest, posttest and total scores from the exercises in the CALL lesson.
The results revealed that the effectiveness of the CALL lesson was higher than those of the established criterion (80/80), which was 83.55/80.66%. The participants’ mean scores from the pretest and posttest were 2.86 and 12.10 respectively. The total score that the learners achieved after the instruction with the CALL lesson was 61.56%. The results revealed that the CALL lesson help the learners reduce the “be” omission in the use of adjectival predicates. Based on the results from the questionnaire, the students were highly satisfied with the CALL lesson.
